I am also somewhat uncomfortable with watching ‘sex scenes’ in movies but I do feel that it was very necessary to show it in Blue. One just have to be very open minded and appreciate the art and all that the girls put into this movie. If I am uncomfortable watching them, just imagine how they must be making them over and over. It’s sort of a relieve to know that these weren’t the hardest, but the eating scenes and the break up scenes were more difficult because they had to show raw emotions. The scene that were the most violent were the ones where they were caught by Adele’s parents and were kicked out in the middle of the night must be extremely difficult since they were both naked during the takes. I supposed I am happy that it wasn’t included in the film . It’s just another appreciation for all the the dedication the girls put forth so the Palme was well deserved by them.

Léa Seydoux and Exarchopoulos Adele: “I know what you’re wondering: are we really slept together? “

And the answer is no. In Life Adele Abdellatif Kechiche, all scenes of sex are simulated. Interview of the two actresses.

Adele, Leah, everyone recognizes that your sex scenes are really hefty. Do you have the funk?
Adèle Exarchopoulos  : Personally, I wanted this movie so I was not afraid. Before or during. I wanted this project. I was uncomfortable, embarrassed, but I was not afraid. I remember the first time we played these sex scenes. We were taken giggles, embarrassed. Because it never goes so far in movies normally.

And there, at public screenings?
Léa Seydoux : There is different … When we saw the film Wednesday audience, when it was discovered the sex scenes on the big screen, it was … shocked. They were touring yet. But I admit, it was embarrassing. AE: Yeah. It was … bestial! There is a power thing, abandonment … frankly it’s hot!

What does that mean? What you did not know it would be at this point …
AE: You let your body talk. You play. And you play it is to look real. It’s funny, since this morning, everyone asks and nobody dares to make.

What question?
AE: Well, I know what you’re wondering: “Are we really slept together?”

And?
AE: Well no.

So sorry to insist, but how does one pretend that the point?
AE: There is a happy medium. Must let his body and find harmony with his partner. Our luck is Abdel left us free. It makes no choreography. He did not say we “put your hand here, put your hand here” … It was well aware that it was intense, it was far, far away even. But then, there, in what I have seen is immense.

You seem to discover the film …
AE: This is true. We have just seen the film a year after shot, it’s completely different. Already, when you did 700 hours of rush, you do not know what the director will keep. I did not know the sex scene lasted 7 minutes, there would be no music. Then there is our breaths and slam our hands on our buttocks.

What is easier: to play a gay or straight scene?
LS: With a woman without hesitation. And Adele has made things even easier. She has a very open relationship with her body. We had the same fears, the same concerns and it was easier to share our impressions, our apprehensions.

How you prepared?
LS: Abdel not really prepared. It seeks to keep the instinct of the game asked me to learn to paint, play sports, it was not me quite muscular … But he wants to put us in first “states” AE: It has not prepared us, but he put us at ease. There was a kind of way, huge affection. Had suddenly want to give him everything …. He especially wanted to build our relationship, to establish a fair thing between us. At first it was a little too far. It was close, fast (laughs) .

You know why he selected you?
AE: I is the mouth. He told me he had chosen me because of my mouth and my way of eating. At first he was sizing me really. He watched me eat, we took drinks together and he spoke to me while watching me … He was looking for what kind of girl I was and what I could bring to the role.

I hear a lot of journalists about the message of the film …
AE: For me, it’s just a beautiful love story. Now, if people see something else and it can make things happen … we will not complain.

“Normal” Sex And Blue Is The Warmest Color

A lot has been said by critics and academics about the way that Abdellatif Kechiche has presented lesbian sex in his last film, and lot of critics have called upon feminist theory and queer theory to support the idea of the male gaze as it relates to this film, so I’m going to assume that if you’ve followed this argument, you’re familiar with Foucault. If you’re not, Foucault’s work focuses on the idea of the self-regulating body. Basically what Foucault argued was that in our search for a social identity, we internalize the rules and morals of our societies, and we enact them upon ourselves and then justify it to ourselves by saying that its a natural part of our desires, when in fact it’s just a reenactment of what has been taught to us by our society.

Personally, I think this idea has a lot of validity. And quite frankly, I think sex is one of the many ways we self-regulate our bodies. For years with lesbians, oral sex and fingering has been represented as not only the normal way for women to have sex, but it’s also the “natural” way. It’s pure. It’s two women meeting in beautiful intimacy blah blah blah. Of course that’s how most women have sex, its all that theyve seen. But it is not the most dynamic. It’s not the most beautiful. It’s not the most erotic. Its not even what necessarily feels best. It’s the baseline. Much like the missionary position of straight couples. And a lot of people stick to it because they’ve been told that’s what normal sex is, but there are so many other things that feel good. And those things quite frankly haven’t been represented in lesbian art, because the lesbian community self-regulates. We tell people who want to represent other forms of sexual expression that they’re catering to men, that most women don’t have sex like that so it’s not ok to show it.

But when you look at straight art, this isn’t a requirement. Do most people have sex like Tang Wei and Tony Leung in Lust Caution? Hell no. But it’s recognized as a beautiful film, with scenes of sex that are unique to its couple in the same way sex is unique with each couple. It isn’t the job of a film to represent the “normal” person, it’s the job of the film to represent the sex that this couple, that these specific characters would experience together. And from everything that has been said about the characters in this film, it seems accurate to say their passion would spill outside the boundaries of “normal” love. It seems appropriate for them to fuck outside of oral sex. There is an excess to the scenes as they have been described, just as there is an excess to the passion in their relationship. Kechiche has no responsibility to the lesbian community, he only has responsibility for this one couple. To hold him accountable for a representation of everyone would be a disservice to these characters and this story. His choices seem logical, considering the narrative he is representing.

Does that make sense? It’s not about saying that there is no normal, there’s a normal for everything. It’s that to say that the norm is all that should be shown is self-regulation that ultimately stagnates the lesbian community and the lesbian sexual body, and it is anathema to art.

  • Intro: Are the sex scenes in ‘Blue Is the Warmest Color’ artful? Or are they ‘male gaze’ porn? There’s something almost reassuring about the fact that in 2013, a movie sex scene could still be controversial. This time, however, the controversy isn’t coming from the forces of conservatism — from a clampdown by the ratings board or from family newspapers that don’t want to advertise a film they deem indecent. This time, the clampdown comes from the forces of the liberal-left. (That’s very 2013.) When Blue Is the Warmest Color played last month at the Cannes Film Festival, the three-hour French…
